Who was your favorite character and why? I admired the way Green drew his characters, Hazel, Augustus, Peter, and Isaac, for examples, so vividly and did not shy away from uncomfortable issues like having cancer and unfair fates. I began thinking about the way that Homer raises the topic of fate in his epic. Some of the minor characters in The Odyssey seem particularly shaped by their fate, (Polyphemus? Nausicaa? ) but the main characters, such as Telemachus and Odysseus seem more shaped by their decisions and actions. In what ways?
Also, if you already read The Fault in Our Stars, does your reading of the Foster book make you rethink some of the scenes? I would love to know what you think about that question as you try to apply the Foster ideas about communion and quest to John Green's novel. What did you think about the allusions to Anne Frank? Does John Green's novel "speak" to the the text of her diary or the play on which her diary is based? Does Foster's idea of intertextuality apply to this book?
Think a bit about these questions; then, comment. There is no right or wrong. Just something to think, then write about.
